Energy savings are expected from the installation of three Spirax Sarco EasiHeat™ units, which are providing heating and hot water for buildings at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
Rated up to 1200kW, EasiHeat™ is a compact steam heat exchange package for supplying heating and instantaneous domestic hot water in large or commercial premises such as hospitals, schools, colleges and hotels.
The EasiHeat™ units in Cardiff replace three shell-and-tube calorifiers, two of which were used to provide hot water for the building while the third fed the heating system. These calorifiers had only the most basic controls, making them very inefficient. "They were basically on or off," says energy maintenance officer Mr. Stuart Cradock. As pressure vessels, the calorifiers were also expensive to maintain due to a regular strip-down and inspection for flaws in the steam tubes.
In contrast, EasiHeat™ packages incorporate controls that modulate the flow of steam into the units' plate heat exchangers to precisely meet demand. This achieves the highest energy efficiency. In addition, the controls on the three units have been customised to interface with the hospital-wide computer-controlled Satchwell building management system (BMS). The BMS allows an operator to control and monitor alarms on any of the automated plant systems around the building from a single computer.
